About

General Information

We utilize proactive, evidence-based practices such as principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, TEACCH, and data collection. Children are provided an individualized daily classroom routine along with off-site outings  to encourage independence and functional skills. Visual schedules, social stories, sensory activities, reinforcement-based interventions, and positive behavior supports are utilized daily.

  • 9:00am – 2:45pm   
  • Pre-K through high school classes 
  • Held at Aurora City Schools (location TBD)

Camp Activities

In addition to a detailed intake packet and IEP objectives or 504 accommodations provided by parents, classroom staff will conduct an orientation prior to the start of camp to ensure that programming is designed specifically to meet the needs of each learner. Camp activities include:

  • Field trips, on site “camp” activities
  • Art, music, and cooking
  • Pretend play/drama
  • Sensory regulation
  • Gross and fine motor activities
  • Academic readiness

 

Camp Staff

Camp Director – Dr. Leah Gongola, PhD., BCBA-D is currently an Associate Professor with  Youngstown State University and has had years of hands-on experience as a general and special educator. Dr. Gongola will be utilizing an intensive individualized curriculum while bringing many new and exciting ideas for Camp Sunshine.

Additionally, our staff includes two Assistant Directors, teachers, practicum students, volunteers, and trained peer models.

Camp Sunshine of Aurora is pleased to offer the Tommy Dankelson Campership Fund for families who qualify.  The fund will assist families undergoing financial hardship with their camp tuition fees.  This fund has been graciously established by Tommy’s family, friends, and our camp family.   Tommy was a member of Camp Sunshine who sadly passed away in October of 2011, and this campership is to honor his memory.  Please email the camp directly for more information or an application.  Applications are due BY April 15, 2014 and selections will be made shortly after.
